Try putting the cake in front a fan for 10-15 minutes. That always helps when my icing won't crust.

I guess it depends on the look you are going for. If you want a four inch layer, then I would suggest at least torting it, that's a lot of cake without filling.

Washable crayons, they wipe off anything with a damp towel. Nothing else is allowed in our house.

I would also try one of those Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, they get a lot of stuff off too.
