As an instructor, I tell my students that putting some meringue powder into their practice icing will help to 'stabilize' it, and keep it from breaking down from the heat of their hand so quickly.

Sounds like an issue with the color gel.
Other causes are often from the amount of minerals in your water, or from using milk in your buttercream, and direct sunlight.

I agree, the stripes would be OK, and the shoe I would put on top of a little fondant disc. That icing is a real bugger to get off decorations that you may want to keep for awhile!
