When doing a cake for a customer do you make them sign a contract? If so is there a website to get an idea of how to do a legal contract on cakes?

Only if you have a legal business. You cannot contract to perform an illegal service.

That said, there is a great one on earlenescakes.com along with lots of other information.

and if you search on here...there are many threads w/ all kinds of contracts.

BUT ....

no matter WHAT....

1) you MUST be legal in order to enforce a contract.

2) you MUST have the contract reviewed by an attorney to be sure it conforms to the laws of your state, county, and city. There can be some odd requirements in terms of how things are laid out or what is allowed. (ex. -- in some jurisdictions you can take a deposit, but it has to be refundable, while in others it can be nonrefundable and in others you can't use the word deposit, instead you have to use the word retainer.)

what doug said .... get it reviewed by an attorney.

Martha Stewart said if you think you are going to save money by NOT contacting an attorney at the beginning, you will pay for it at the end. The woman may have spent time in jail, but she's a freakin' billionaire and I tend to listen to people who have managed to make a billion dollars in their lifetime.

If you're in biz, you should have an attorney anyway.
