I like rating pictures on a job well done. Now that I think about it, I think I've only ever rated a few pics....I mostly leave comments.
I also like to think what others think of my cakes, so honest opinions are better (for me). It should be optional, I think. I don't think I'd be too heartbroken if you got rid of it though But, if it's discouraging people then it should be done way with. I doubt this site was meant to bring anyone down. |

I am a newbie at cake decorating (been decorating less than six months), so I am aware that my skill level is not going to be that of someone who has been decorating for many years. I am always looking for constructive criticism to help me become a better decorator. I do believe, however, that the star system does not work as well as the comments work. I had much rather have someone explain to me how my cake could be improved than just telling me that it is not very good. I believe that all of us cake decorators are artists..and we should be proud of our artworks. I cannot help to think about my two year old son when thinking about rating any kind of artwork, cake decorating included. There is no way that I would tell my two year old son that his artwork was not good enough, or that someone else's is better. Also, there is no way that I would compare his artwork to that of Picasso or any other famous artist, although the artwork of my son means much more to me than an artwork from any famous artist. |

Just curious when a decision may be made on this? Are you waiting for more votes? So far it looks like no one who's voted wants to keep the star rating system particularly.

I can't believe someone would rate a cake as zero. That is really rude and discouraging to the decorator. As someone else mentioned, we are all at different levels. We should be encouraging each other.
I actually like rating cakes and usually give out four and five stars.
I guess the saying should apply, "If you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all."

I enjoy rating pictures but I agree with most who've mentioned - I think it should be optional for people who want their pics rated and their should be categories or something different to compare to. Should their be a beginner section to post in? Intermediate levels???
Or I like this better, Instead of having the ratings by albums should you only be able to rate the persons pictures compared to only their own cakes? Example, there should be a section to rate cakes but you should have to click on one individual where it opens up a folder for only their cakes AND THEIR SKILL LEVEL and then you should rate their cakes only based on those they have posted and w/ their skill level. AND ONLY THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO CAN RATE HAVE TO BE REGISTERED USERS.
WHAT ABOUT THIS??? What about having people think about the way they rate by posting the username with the rating? I think that would make people think twice about rating cakes zeros if they know everyone will see who did it and if their is a pattern - I don't know their are pros and cons to that theory that would need to be weighed because then people might overrate if they know their name will be posted and so that takes away some of the honesty of ratings.
I see where the dilema is here - I would want someone to rate my cakes based on MY cakes only - don't compare me to someone who's been doing it for 20 years when I am new but I would like to be rated by others who could help me develop better skills so I think the rating system should be optional, just improved somehow. That's my suggestion - did it come out making sense? Or did I just confuse people? |

I'm in favor of having the ratings be optional. I know that there's some I would want ratings on, and some that I wouldn't; I'm sensitive about some of my cakes but not others.
I love Shugga's suggestion that in order to vote, you have to be registered. I think that would discourage a lot of trolls.

Just as a quick clarification, the way it is now, you DO have to be a registered member and be logged in before you can rate photos. |

I like the idea of having the username by the rating. |

I have been thinking and thinking about this.. I can understand some people being discouraged with the ratings, but I am not, maybe its because I always feel my cakes are a learning experience and if I cant take the judgment of other people then maybe I shouldnt post them. I am not saying that others should think that way or do, I am saying I do. I havent posted a couple of cakes because I think they are good, and I need to think they are without having others say yes or no to it. Its sort of a self boostin thing. Just because I think its cute or great doesnt mean it is, but I dont want every cake I do seen...does that make sense
But I still think that the rating should be optional by poster.
(From here on posted 8 April)
Having names by the rating would discourage people from rating at all because of the fear of bashing from the other posters...just because one person loves the cake doesnt mean another will and then what pics that poster would post would only get bashed because of the rating. It should be optional for sure.... |

Since this subject has been opened up... I am going to give my 2 cents... There not worth a hill of beans but I'm going to give them anyway.
I have noticed a lot of "you should do this or you should do that" posted on the pics that are being posted. When I post a pic I hate it when someone tells me how I should have done my cake. I am posting my cakes because I am proud of them & want to share them. Not because I want to be judged. I would rather you NOT make a comment then post something that might make me discouraged or hurt my feelings. None of this has happened to me. It has been brought up by several people I'm friends with on here & I'm speaking for them & me!
If someone makes a post in one of the forums about there cake or asks questions on what they could have done better then that gives us the chance to turn them in the right direction. If they don't ask I don't think anyone has the right to tell them there cake was bad or this & that is wrong with it.
Another thing... While I'm on a soap box... I give advice but I do not give advice unless I have done the technique the post is about. I have read a lot of posts where people are giving advice on things that they have just read about on cake central. Just by reading a post does not intitle you to give advice.
I think posts should stay in the forums & galleries should only be positive & do away with the stars. If there hurting people that would be a good idea.
I know I've stepped on some peoples toes. I'm am sorry. Hopefully I don't get kicked off here! Jackie don't kick me off!! I love cake central!! |

TC I am sure you will be fine...I can't imagine anyone taking that the wrong way. Its a well put opinion! We all give opinions, adults have opinions and it takes adults to understand they are opinions and continue forward! I appreciate hearing peoples opinions, especially when I myself have the same feeling/opinion but wont post because I dont want to hurt people's feelings...I worry so much about that!!!! We love you and I love the posters here, they are the "online world's best forumers!" |

Personally, I think it's rude to 'rate' someone's cake. We are all at different skill levels and have different abilities. A decorated cake is a work of art and you shouldn't judge art, because we are all unique. Unless you rate someone's cake as excellent, it would be hurtful to rate it as anything less, IMO.
