Hi to all,

I'm hoping to get some help, and taking from all the streams on this site, everyone seems willing to. I've been making cakes for my family since my children were born. I have yet to buy a cake for them, I have made every single one, over 100 I would say. I have lost many to the past, before I realized how important this was to me and started taking pictures. I've taken picture of cakes in the past year only Sad . lately every cake I make, I get the same thing, "you should do this as a business". I don't think I'm at that stage but I want to show my cakes to the public, we all need to start somewhere. I have finaly convinced myself to do it, and I'm faced with a problem. I don't know where to start. If there is anyone out there that has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

How about the LA County Fair? It should be happening this month. I know that they have a baking contest b/c I've seen it. But I didn't pay attention if they had a cake decorating contest. GL and I hope you find the right venue.

You can enter cakes at the L.A. County Fair only if you don't sell them as a business (I recently got caught after several years of entering and cannot enter anymore Embarassed ); and if you do enter a cake you cannot advertise.
Also, the state of California will never allow you to have a home based food business EVER. Your home-based "business" would have to be strictly under the table and by word of mouth only...no advertising whatsoever (they could catch you).
I had business cards printed up and include a few with my cake orders. I also made up small photo albums and left them at local kids party places and bridal boutiques (with owners permission) and they have helped my illegal under-the-table business quite a bit Very Happy
Good luck!

I live about 10 miles east of Downtown Los Angeles, Montebello....thank you very much for the info... I will keep in mind. In your opinion is it a good move to enter the fair, if your nothing else but opinions on my cakes?

Thanks,
B

It's fun to enter the fair and you still have time to enter too. Go to Fairplex.com for more info. and to download entry forms.

You have a nice attention to detail on your cakes. I especially like the wedding, Nemo and Dora cakes.

I have family in Montebello near Grant Rea park and I also worked there for 6 years. What's the name of that popular bakery on Garfield? Lynn's? Love their butter cookies and mini-pastries.

Let me know if you decide to enter so I can look for your cakes Wink

I'm also in the l.a. area, not to far off from you. Close to downtown we should talk. Where its true you will not be able to "go legal" in our state working from home there are lots of ways to handle it without getting into legal trouble. In los angeles (ela) there is a cake club that is run by the cake lady, you can get exposure there as well as getting together with other decorators like yourself to share ideas. pm me since there is so much info I can pass along and be happy to.
