It says that professionals can't submit entries, so if we have businesses we can't enter?

I did not see that, but good point. Do you have a bakery?

I work out of my home, but I'd think that if I have a business license (which I do) then that counts as being professional, so I'd be ineligible. I didn't even know they had a wedding cake contest anyway...I went last year to look at the giant pumpkins!

Well I am not sure, becuase in the Richmond, Chesterfield area ( I am not sure where you are located) you are not required to have a business liscence for home baking. So I dont have one, but i have been inspected by the Dept. of Agriculture. I dont do this full time so I dont know what is really considered to be professional.

This is off topic, but I think that if you're selling cakes, then you need to have a business license for the state. You should be collecting sales tax and reporting that, so if I were you I'd check with the state department of revenue about a business license. Any time you sell anything you need to collect the sales tax, and they'll get you good if they find out that you haven't been doing that. They can hit you for back taxes and fines as well...I know a caterer whose hobby it is to go around reporting people who aren't licensed and getting the percentage of the "narc" fine that you get if you turn someone in.

I know that they were talking about changing the inspection laws for home baking, but not the licensing.

Anyway, I think that if you sell cakes, as both of us do, then we qualify as professional. For that I'd check with the state fair people directly, but I'd suspect that's how it would be decided.

I have emailed the person in charge of that competition division for clarification on this topic! As soon as I get a response I will post it here.

As promised I am here to update you on the state fair rules.
They do specify that this competition is not for professionals.
Their definition of professional is anyone who gets the majority of their income from cake decorating. I was specifically told that if you do this on the side and have some income that is fine, but if you do this soley and it is your only income you may not enter.

FYI. I am in an online cake decorating contest. If you have not voted, please vote for "Melissa's Cake" and pass the link onto your friends and family and tell them to vote for "Melissa's Cake"
Here is the voting link www.cakerysupplies.homestead.com
