As some of you have noticed, there is now a link at the top of Cake Central for donations. I just want to post a little explanation of what this is all about.
The Cake Central community is growing rapidly, and with that grow it takes more and more hardware to provide all the features the community wants as reasonable speeds. Especially things like all the uploading and viewing of images can take a real toll on the servers when you have 70,000 people trying to do it.
We opened the Cake Central Shop as a means to pay for these growing server costs but we run into a catch 22. As the server costs continue to rise, we have to do more and more business with the store to cover it. The more time we spend on the store, shipping packages and managing inventory, the less time we have to fix problems on the site and add new features.
So we have decided that accepting donations to help cover the growing hardware costs was the right step to take. We will not REQUIRE donations, nor will be solicit for them, other than a banner on the website. This just provides a way for members to help keep this community growing at their own discretion.
We will never move to a required membership format, the whole purpose of this community is to provide a free place to exchange ideas. Donations are voluntary and anonymous.
It is not a specific time period item, we will leave open the ability to make donations for as long as we feel it is the best way to help the community grow and develop.

No, problem with so many people and you are only asking for a $1 or more if it can be spared will help cake central and everyone that wants to look at the great stuff here. Count me in.

I would be more than happy to donate if the money is used to either go with another server or upgrade this one to maximum capacity. The amount of down time in the 3 months I have been here has been so frustrating. And even after this past week with the major breakdown there are still problems. The speed is so slow that opening a post, posting, trying to open pms or send, trying to view photos in the gallery are all taking much longer than I have ever experienced and I have broadband. I can't imagine how slow it must be for members with dial up. I get so tired of sitting there waiting for something to happen that I click off the forum out of frustration. I can't even get CC to open from my favorites any longer, I have to go to Yahoo or Google to click on and even then it doesn't always open. It times out. I get an email that I have a pm waiting at CC, click on the link in the email and either it never opens or it takes forever. I have a new computer and as mentioned, broadband and I know it isn't a problem from my end because this is the only website I have a problem with.
I do donate each year to another cake forum and as I said, I would be happy to do that at CC. So, can you tell us how the donated money will be used and if we will be assured of better service?

FYI -- the form lets you put in any amount you want to donate.
So easy to donate more than $1.

I'm so glad to see you doing this! I was worrying over the past week or so as you have had so much trouble with the servers. I know it costs so much to run and couldn't believe you were still doing this for free.
