Is there a way to make hair out of spun sugar?
I want to make a victorian lady out of cake and the body out of gum paste. I have everything figured out but the hair. I thought of cotton candy, but that won't do. I would like to make the hair look like it has ringlits and stands quite high from on top of the head that is also sugar.
Any ideas? |

The best way I can think of is to attach the head (premade) to a stick and then tape it to the end of a table. Then, when you get the sugar hot, take two forks and very quickly spin the sugar around the head (you might need to get a friend to help you twist the head so the sugar doesn't all drop down due to our friend gravity). It doesn't set instantly, so when you're done, you could probably try to get a few tendrils to curl. Sounds like a brilliant cake! |

You need to becareful if it is humid or the spun sugar will get sticky. You can use isomalt but I find it tacky still too. Have you thought about extruding fondant through a clay gun? Spun sugar is prtty fragile . You could pull some spirals. have you pulled sugar before? |

Isomalt is expensive! Sugar is hygroscopic which means it will attract moisture. Not a good idea for fine thread such as hair. Fondant extruded through a clay gun or potatoe ricer would be better. Once the spun sugar hardens its going to be become brittle and break easily. Go with fondant your best bet here.

Sorry I am so late in responding. I had a big family get together and celabrated my birthday. I didn't touch the computer for a few days.
Thanks for all of the responses and ideas.
I have pulled sugar before, however it has been awhile I like the idea of the spun sugar around the head and I can see that it will take two people.
The head is sugar so the spun sugar should stick. I have had thei project on hold for some time now. I think that I'm gonna do a trial run of spun sugar on a styrofoam ball and see how it does.

You can use pulled sugar. Kind of pull it in locks or curls.Its hard to explain unless you have seen it. |

There is an absolute easier way if you have a "clay gun"....you can press "strands" of hair..like fine spagetti...and "style" them any way you like...this is how most sugar artists fashion hair.
Unless you have your heart set on something "different" I would go with the clay gun.

Clay will work but make sure its free of any moisture or your going to melt your piece. Ewald Notter in his book The Textbook of Sugar Pouring and Pulling shows how to make hair out of pulled sugar but the book is expensive around $100 and most people do not do enough sugar work to justify buying it. oops sorry forgot that not everyone would know what I talk about..lol...use a brand new, clean "CLAY GUN"...keep it for food only.. and load it with fondant. Press it through one of the disc it comes with and make "strands" of hair.
Then you can "style" it..
