Hi everyone,
I have received many request for instructions on how to do the Minnie mouse cake in my photos so I thought I would start a forum post on this particular subject if anyone is intersted. As I stated in my comments section of the photo, I do not have any particular instructions written up or a template, but I can explain to the best of my ability. Just let me know. And again THANK YOU SO MUCH for all of the nice comments. |

Okay, here goes my best attempt at instructions for the Minnie Mouse cake in my photos.
Supplies:
1 - Double layer 10" round cake
2 - Double layer 6" round cakes
Red (thin icing) for the sides of the cake (I am not sure of the exact amount I made, but I know I made a lot so that I would not run out in the middle - I probably made 4 1/2 to 8 cups worth)
Flesh tone (thin icing) for the face of the cake
Fondant:
Red (for the bow and mouth)
White (for the polka dots and the eyes)
Black (for the ears and the rest of the facial features)
Here goes:
First I place the ten inch cake on the board where I want them. Fill with filling of choice and stack as usual. Then you have the placement for the ear. Then I filled and stacked the 6 inch cakes off of the board. One you have your two seperate "ears" you then cut a small cresent of cake out to fit up against the "head". What I did is make a quick pattern so the cuts were the same. Then place the ears on your board where you want them up against the 10 inch cake. Once you have the cake placed where you want them you can start icing. I did the red icing on the sides first (where the "ears" meet the "head" can be tricky because you have limited space). I really went to town with my viva to smooth the cracks and crevices. Once you have your sides smooth you can then do the flesh tone icing on the top of the cake. Ice and smooth the top of the cake as usual. Once you have the the sides and top done you are ready to start your fondant accents. The fondant for the ears: What I did is make a pattern of the shape of the cake before it has icing on it so you have the exact shape of the cake (use parchment paper or wax paper so you can see through and see the cake a little). Once I had the outline of the cake I drew the shape of the face (I just eye balled my drawing from a coloring sheet). What I did is find a good coloring page picture of Minnie Mouse on the computer. From there I just eyeballed it and drew my shapes out by hand. If you have a hard time with drawing out the shapes, you can just enlarge the coloring page and use it as a template. Once you have your patterns for everything, roll out you fondant and use your patterns to cut out your shapes. I don't remember the exact order I placed the features onto the cake, but you have to get the basic features on first just for correct placement. I think if you start with the whites of the eyes and move down the face it is easier to get correct placement. Once the basic shapes are on your cake, just add in the details. When your face is done add a small tip (I think a #6) snails trail border on the top and bottom of the cake. Now add your white polka dots at random to the side of the cake. I used the smallest circle fondant cutter for these dots (Wilton fondant cutters). Now that everything is done you can put your bow in place and then you are done with your cake.
For the bow: A few days in advance...Make red fondant with tylose powder added and make two bow loops and let dry. I think I cut the strips of fondant about 4 inches wide to make my loops. Once your bow loops are dry, just use a small amout of water to add white polka dots to the bow loops at random. Place the bow loops where you want them on the cake, and then add the middle piece of fondant around the ends of the bow loops (kind of scrunched for the center loop). I think I put a little bit of buttercream under the loops just to keep them in place.
If you want a Mickey Mouse cake just keep the bow off and do not add "eyelashes"
I hope this helps. If anyone has any questions, just let me know.
Thanks |
