With all the lawsuits going on all the time, even for the very simple thing, are you afraid that someone might just do that?
I began cake decorating several months ago and my friends and relatives have been asking me a lot lately to make paid occasion cakes for them, but I'm reluctant to do that, thinking if something goes wrong, or if the cake is mishandled by them, I might face a lawsuit, and loose everything I have for... what ...$30?
Am I being too paranoid?
Do you ever think of this?
Emi

Do bakeries have some sort of waiver? The big chain groceries could probably handle a lawsuit, but I don't think a bakery would...if they don't worry about it, it's probably not really an issue.

Thank you all for sharing your toughts. I was wondering if the homeowners insurance would cover something like that.

I wouldn't think so...but it might be worth checking into some sort of small business insurance. But that's challenging. I used to have another small business and it took me about 30 calls before I could find someone to cover small businesses and I'm 15 minutes from a fairly good sized city!! (Cincinnati)

I've got to admit I've pondered this as well. I actually think it's illegal to "officially" sell food items from your home kitchen without the proper permits. (someone making housecalls to make sure your kitchen meets all the cleanliness requirements, etc.) I'll stick to selling to people I trust. Does ANYONE out there have permits? (or know more on this subject?)
